We're in the process of evaluating products for some PDF generation. One problem that we've seen in several other PDF products that work is HTML is that they automate Internet Explorer to do the page rendering. This doesn't work so well in a high volume situation.

After reviewing the prince documentation I believe that prince does its own rendering and does not rely upon any installed browsers. Is this correct?

Yes this is correct, Prince has its own layout engine designed for paged media.

And it does a VERY good job. And if you find something that you need that doesn't seem to be there, ask. They may have an even easier way of doing it. If what you need is truly missing, they add it to the roadmap of things to do.
