Is there any problem with installing a new version, keeping the old version?

Installing a new RPM or DEB package will replace the previously installed package. But if you install a .tar.gz package, you can put it anywhere and have multiple versions installed.

Do I need to use the static version to have multiple or will the dynamically linked package work ok when multiple versions are installed?

Dynamically linked is best.
