Under what circumstances do I get the error

In the output log? How it this to be understood?

This kind of scary error message should never be produced; we want Prince to do its work silently and without complaint

What kind of document were you formatting at the time? In particular, did it contain many large images? Or use more fonts than normal?

For the record, this bug has been fixed in Prince 5.0.
